An SVG Green Party government
will introduce an Environmental Allowance for every household of EC$ 200 dollars
a month. This will be a first in the Caribbean. The Allowance is to help households
maintain good health and improve their living environment.
The Environmental Allowance will help SVG honour its commitment to the United
Nations Millennium Goals, where we vowed among other things to:
||• Reduce by half the proportion of people living on less
than US$ 1 dollar a day;
• Reduce by half the proportion of people who
suffer from hunger;
• Ensure that all boys and girls complete a full
course of primary schooling;
• Reduce by two thirds the mortality rate
among children under five;
• Integrate the principles of sustainable
development into country policies and programmes, and reverse the loss of environmental
• Reduce by half the proportion of people without sustainable
access to safe drinking water.
The philosophy behind the Environmental Allowance is to stimulate
the circulation of money within the SVG economy and to assist in eradicating poverty
within SVG. With money circulating our economy will be more vibrant and the Allowance
would create trade for everyone, especially shop keepers, farmers, small businesses,
minibus drivers and new entrepreneurs could rely on this income while their businesses
With an Environmental Allowance households will be able to plan better knowing
they will have EC$ 200 dollars a month extra coming in. At present, many households
survive on less than EC$10 dollars a day, but with this allowance, households
will be able to buy healthier food and there will be less pressure on the family,
especially those of the unemployed. The health of people in poor households will
be dramatically improved.
With the SVG Green Party’s plans for a multi-component economy the Environmental
Allowance will be manageable. No other party can deliver the economic expertise
needed to make the Environmental Allowance a success.
The SVG Green Party urges all voters to vote the telephone to guarantee that their
household gets the Environmental Allowance, because if their constituency does
not have a green party representative in the House of Assembly, then there is
a chance that they may not get the Environmental Allowance.
