Scientists tell us global warming will cause the present sea level to rise. About 85 per cent of SVG’s population of 107,000 live less than 5 metres above sea level. Almost all of SVG’s economic investment and hubs of infrastructure are also found in these low land areas. Flooding due to climate change would have a massive negative impact on SVG.

To construct a one billion dollar Argyle airport, in which the runway can be under seawater by threat of global warming, is a man-made disaster. It must be urgently avoided by the cancellation of the Argyle airport as dyking of the Argyle sea would be financially impossible.

The Underwater airport will be of no benefit to Vincentians. It will just make Vincentians slaves and servants to tourists. It will be the first under water airport in the world and will make SVG the laughing stock of the world. What we need in SVG is jobs for people now; reduced crime; incomes for the poor and unemployed now; and food on the table in poor households. An underwater airport in 10 years’ time will be of no benefit in providing the children of SVG a good education now.

The one billion dollars should be invested in the people of SVG, providing decent long-term jobs, decent incomes, a safer country and a modern education for the children of SVG. It should not be spent on giving tourists yet another holiday destination for their 2 week holiday.

Rather than putting money into the pockets of Vincentians, the ULP regime will be taking money out of Vincentians’ pockets to fund the 1 billion dollars (that’s 1,000,000,000 dollars of our money) just to give tourists a 2 week holiday and Vincentians nothing!

The SVG Green Party has stated that Ralph Gonsalves’ leadership of SVG is a joke. SVG has a very weak economy: mass tourism is certainly not the answer for a strong SVG economy. The benefit gained from cancelling the Argyle airport project will be a big blessing to SVG. After 7 years in office we have had no innovation from the sloppy ULP regime to build a strong economy.

The intelligent and competent SVG Green Party is calling for good common sense to prevail and that the Underwater airport be cancelled to facilitate the building of a strong economy that is pro-active in helping Vincentians cope with climate change and global warming.

The solution for SVG’s weak economy is an economically intelligent SVG Green Party government with the SVG economy driven by Green policies, which include cancelling the Underwater airport and the cross-country road. The weak economy is the root cause of violent crime in SVG and spending hundreds of millions of taxpayers’ money to build the Underwater airport is not a solution.

SVG Green Party has a strong leadership and urges the public to vote Green to bring about positive change to SVG. We are starting to see a generation of young people that have left school and never worked, because there are no jobs for them. We must cancel the Underwater airport and invest money in young people so they can achieve their dreams.
